Iconic Matchup: Lakers Versus Celtics
Feb 9th, 2012 by PJ LaFerla
Whenever you are in a discussion about the NBA, it is nearly impossible not to mention the Los Angeles Lakers or the Boston Celtics or any player (past or present) that has been associated with either organization.
The matchup between the Lakers and Celtics always brings a rejuvenated amount of energy – from the fans and the players. Regardless of how well the teams are performing or where each stands in their respective divisions during any given season, you can expect an intense 48 minutes, with if nothing else – pride and tradition on the line.
The Lakers come into Boston on a the heels of a two-game losing streak, with an overall won/loss team record of 14-11 straight up, but only covering eleven of those games. However, when playing the Celtics in Boston, the Lakers own a 4-2 record straight up in the past six matchups.
The Celtics have been playing much better as of late, riding a five-game win streak, which has contributed to their overall won/loss team record of 14-10. Against the spread they fair better than the Lakers, but have only achieved a .500 record of 12-12. An interesting fact about the total – when these two tip off in Boston, five of the last five games have stayed UNDER the posted total.
WHO WILL COVER THE SPREAD?
The Oddsmakers have set this line at -3.5 points – favoring the Celtics, while the total is set a 176.5 Giving how poorly the Lakers have played on the road this season and how hot the Celtics are playing, it would be difficult not to make a play on the Celtics. Both these teams are old and tired, but the advantage and momentum is clearly with the Celtics. I do believe the Celtics will win and cover this game. As far as the total, I like the OVER.
PREDICTION:
Celtics 96, Lakers 86
For your enjoyment, I have posted a classic matchup between the Lakers and Celtics from the 2008 finals!
